What Causes Plantar Fasciitis? And why is it not getting better?

Plantar Fasciitis Symptoms and Causes

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that causes pain and discomfort in the heel and sole of the foot. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes, becomes inflamed or irritated. In Australia, plantar fasciitis is a prevalent issue, affecting an estimated 10% of the population.

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis include:

  • heel pain: sharp, stabbing pain in the heel, especially noticeable in the morning or after rest;
  • sole pain: ache or throbbing sensation along the sole of the foot, often towards the arch area;
  • morning stiffness: stiffness and limited mobility in the foot, particularly in the morning;
  • tenderness: sensitivity and tenderness in the heel and sole, especially where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel bone;
  • gradual onset: symptoms develop slowly over time, starting with mild and intermittent pain that can progress to become more persistent and severe.

Even if you feel like you have managed to live with heel pain, it can impact and affect your daily life:

  • Everyday tasks can become impossible: simple things like walking the dog, running after your children, exercising or even doing the groceries;
  • Concentration issues, as the inflammation in your heel impacts your ability to concentrate;
  • Feeling downcast or depressed, due to heel pain stopping you from doing everyday tasks and the things you love;
  • Getting out and about less, in the hope to avoid inflammation and pain.

It doesn’t have to be this way! CHH has helped many patients suffering from Plantar Fasciitis to return them to their normal lifestyles!

Our 5 step Plantar Fasciitis Recovery Program can help you!

Step 1:
Assessment is the Key

Here at CHH, our team of experienced Osteopaths will initially perform a thorough case history and physical examination, in order to ascertain the exact root cause of your symptoms. Once we have determined the cause, we will then explain our findings to you.

Based on the assessment, we develop an individualised and targeted treatment plan, to help restore your health and get you back on track to doing the things you love!

Step 2:
Hands-On Therapy

Treatments at CHH aim to restore proper function and balance to the body, which can reduce heel pain. Our team will tailor a treatment program for you using a variety of hands-on techniques. These may include soft tissue massage, stretching, joint mobilisation, dry needling, muscle energy techniques, counter-strain techniques, manipulation techniques and more.

Step 3:
Exercise Rehabilitation and Management

Your Osteopath will develop a customised exercise plan focusing on increasing your activity/sport or returning to work in a way that is managed and appropriate for your condition and current circumstances, putting you back in control of your wellbeing and health.

Step 4:
Education and Prevention

Education and prevention are essential for long-term management of plantar fasciitis. The pain and symptoms associated with plantar fasciitis can be disruptive to your day-to-day life and can often leave you feeling frustrated. The CHH Osteopaths will teach you strategies to break the cycle, preventing reoccurrence.

Step 5:
Recovery

Your recovery journey is crucial as it allows the body time to heal, rebuild strength and restore your overall well-being. That way, you will get back to doing the things you love sooner!

The Osteopaths at CHH will work towards your recovery goals, whether they be getting back to work, exercise or playing with the kids. By utilising our 5-step program, we can help you get back to normal movement and function, whilst also preventing your injury from reoccurring.
