Vertigo Symptoms and Causes

Vertigo is a type of dizziness that can cause a person to feel like they are spinning, swaying or tilting, even when they are standing still. In Australia, it is estimated that approximately 35% of adults experience dizziness or vertigo at some point in their lives, with older adults being more likely to be affected.

Descriptions of vertigo may include:

  • a sensation of movement (including spinning), either of yourself or the external environment;
  • unsteadiness, including finding it difficult to walk in a straight line;
  • light-headedness;
  • dizziness;
  • feeling faint.

Other symptoms that may accompany vertigo include:

  • headache;
  • nausea and vomiting;
  • fatigue;
  • ringing or other sounds in the ears (tinnitus);
  • difficulty hearing;
  • staggering gait and loss of coordination (ataxia);
  • unusual eye movements, such as flitting of the eyes (nystagmus);
  • blurred vision;
  • slurred speech;
  • weakness of the limbs;
  • finding it difficult to see clearly when moving, for example, when reading a sign while walking or driving;
  • difficulty concentrating.

Symptoms may be constant or come and go. Episodes can last from minutes to days.

Even if you feel like you have managed to live with Vertigo, it can impact and affect your daily life:

  • Everyday tasks can become impossible: simple things like bending over and playing with your children, turning your head whilst driving, exercising, changing positions quickly, stress and anxiety can trigger vertigo;
  • Sleeping issues, leading to low energy levels throughout the day;
  • Concentration issues, as your vertigo impacts your ability to concentrate, study or read
  • Feeling downcast or depressed, due to vertigo stopping you from doing everyday tasks and the things you love;
  • Getting out and about less, in the hope to avoid triggers.

It doesn’t have to be this way! CHH has helped many patients suffering from Vertigo to return them to their normal lifestyles!

Our 5 step Vertigo Recovery Program can help you!

Step 1:
Assessment is the Key

Our team of Osteopaths at Canterbury Health Hub (CHH) will first evaluate your vertigo history, current management, triggers and things that relieve your symptoms. A physical examination will be undertaken before creating an individualised treatment plan.

Step 2:
Vestibular Recovery Osteopathy

Vestibular Recovery Osteopathy focuses on how the ear and brain work together to control our balance and coordination, particularly when vertigo or dizziness occurs. The Osteopaths at CHH will use specific techniques on various areas of your musculo-skeletal system, to help enhance vestibular system function and reduce your dizziness and vertigo symptoms.

Step 3:
Hands-on Therapy

Osteopathic treatments at CHH aim to restore proper function and balance to the body, which can reduce vertigo. Our team will tailor a treatment program for you using a combination of soft tissue massage, stretching, gentle joint mobilisation and cranial osteopathy techniques. Using a gentle approach will allow a slow release of tension.

Step 4:
Exercise Rehabilitation and Management

Your Osteopath will develop a customised exercise plan focusing on increasing your activity/sport or returning to work in a way that is managed and appropriate for your condition and current circumstances, putting you back in control of your wellbeing and health.

Step 5:
Education and Prevention

Education and prevention are essential for long-term management of vertigo. CHH takes a holistic full body approach to vertigo management, targeting not just the head but the whole body. That way, you will get back to doing the things you love sooner!
