What is Dietetics?

A dietitian is a highly trained professional who specialises in nutrition and plays a crucial role in promoting optimal health.

When consulting a dietitian, individuals can benefit from personalised nutrition plans, disease management support, weight management strategies, and guidance for achieving their health goals. Dietitians work through a comprehensive process of assessment, goal setting, personalised nutrition plans, education, and ongoing support. They offer professionalism, evidence-based practice, empathy, and collaboration with other healthcare providers.

Through various treatments and interventions like medical nutrition therapy, nutritional counselling, behaviour modification, and nutritional education, dietitians help individuals make positive changes to their eating habits and improve overall well-being.

Dietitians complete a 5 year full time University degree that leads to a Bachelor/Masters qualification. They are government registered healthcare providers registered to treat WorkCover, TAC, and Veterans’ Affairs patients. Dietitians are trained to recognise conditions which require medical referral or referral to another Allied Health Practitioner.

In Australia, dietitians are nationally registered with Dietitians Australia. Dietitians Australia was established in the mid 1900’s, acts as the national professional body representing dietitians, and is the leading voice in nutrition and dietetics in Australia. Dietitians Australia regulates the Accredited Practising Dietitian credential and standards. Will Jenkins, dietitian at Canterbury Health Hub, is registered with Dietitians Australia and holds Accredited Practising Dietitian credentials.

Common Conditions Dietitians Treat

Weight Management

Through lifestyle modification, diet prescription, energy intake modification, and supplement use, we help people create a personalised plan for their weight loss.

Sports Nutrition

We can help people with correct energy intake and fuelling, refuelling and recovery after sport, building muscle, cutting down fat, body composition manipulation, injury recovery and prevention, and enhanced performance.

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDS)

A common problem in some athletes is under-eating and over-training, which leads to inadequate energy and nutrient intakes, causing problems such as increased injury rates, tiredness and lethargy, poor sport / exercise performance, missed menstrual periods, recurrent illness, weight loss, and iron deficiency.

REDS is commonly diagnosed following a stress fracture.

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders commonly include anorexia nervosa (not eating / eating very little), and bulimia nervosa (recurrent binge-eating followed by restrictive eating / regurgitating food).

Food Intolerances

Many stomach issues are caused by a food intolerance, which may be due to FODMAP’s (fructose, lactose, other specific carbohydrates). Symptoms may present as bloating, gas, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain or discomfort, changes in stool, fatigue, and tiredness.

Low FODMAP Diets

We work with people to manage their food intolerances through the low FODMAP diet.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (stomach gas, bloating, pain, discomfort, diarrhoea)

Similar to food intolerances, but may also be caused by stress, anxiety, mood, and other lifestyle factors.

Coeliac Disease

An auto-immune disease causing, most commonly, diarrhoea. Other symptoms include bloating, wind, fatigue, low blood count (anaemia), and osteoporosis.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

IBD includes Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, both characterised by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms can be severe, and include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, weight loss, fever, anaemia, and malnutrition.

Diabetes

Usually uncontrolled blood sugars. Long term conditions that can result from uncontrolled diabetes include kidney damage, eye problems, nerve damage, and foot problems.

High Cholesterol

Excessive intake of cholesterol, which may lead to heart attack, stroke, and heart disease.

Vegetarian / Vegan / Plant Based Nutrition

Some people following restrictive diets may need help to get all the nutrients they require to achieve their best health. Often people may be low in iron, calcium, or vitamin B12 following these restrictive diets. Dietary changes can easily help people compensate.

Skin Folds and Body Composition

Skin folds are an accurate way of tracking body fat and body compositions, especially for athletes and active individuals. A full body composition analysis gives clients a full overview of their body fat, muscle mass, and overall body composition.

Meal Plans

Individualised meal plans developed to achieve a client’s personal goals, manage their health concerns, and help give them control over their health and eating.
