What is Upper Cross Syndrome and how can massage help correct it?

Upper Cross Syndrome (UCS) is best described as a common postural presentation caused by a muscular imbalance affecting the shoulder complex and the neck. This imbalance is caused by key muscle groups in the front and back of our upper body being equally weak in some parts and tight in other parts.

Common postural presentations can include:

  • Forward head carriage (protrusion of the head)
  • Rounded shoulders
  • Increased flexion of the neck
  • Altered breathing pattern
  • Decreased range of motion in the neck and shoulders
  • Tight muscles with associated trigger points

Typically, these presentations are most common amongst those who spend extended periods of time in front of a desk or computer, driving, factory line workers and manual therapists.

Symptoms of UCS can include:

  • Posterior neck and thoracic pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Chest pain
  • Jaw pain (TMJ)
  • Pins & Needles in fingers
  • Cervicogenic Headaches

A massage therapist would aim to lengthen the shortened / tight muscles throughout the body using a series of massage strokes and techniques on both the front and back of the body to help correct this postural imbalance.

Furthermore, your massage therapist will educate you on how you can strengthen the weakened muscles through corrective exercises and stretches which can easily be done at home or at the gym.

Common corrective exercises / stretches can include:

  • Chin Tucks
  • Pec Major Stretch
  • Seated / Standing Rows
